New underground power cables for CBD
Between June and August 2022, our contractor Downer installed larger capacity underground electricity cables between Ferguson and Main Street substations.
To install the cables, holes were excavated at strategic locations between the two substations to allow for the new cables to be hauled through existing underground cable ducts. Once the cables had been joined at the excavation points, the holes were filled.
To allow the work to be carried out safely, traffic management was needed at times on the route, which included parts of Ferguson and Princess streets, and a small section of Main Street.
“I want to personally thank our customers and businesses on the work routes and the wider Palmerston North community for their patience and understanding while these essential works were carried out,” General Manager Electricity Karen Frew says.
“We appreciate this is a busy stretch of road in the CBD. We communicated with council, residents and businesses along the route to make sure people were informed of the work and how it may have affected their premises.”
