Accelerating into the electricity industry
Powerco has teamed up with Taranaki Futures to offer two high school students planning a career in electrical engineering a chance to gain real-life industry insights.
Taranaki Futures’ Accelerator Programme improves the pathway between education and employment by giving high school students opportunities to spend time in an industry they’re interested in entering, so they can learn more about what it’s really like.
Through the programme, Bella Thornhill from New Plymouth Girls’ High School and Cole Duffy from New Plymouth Boys’ High School will be joining the Powerco team one afternoon a week throughout Term Three to gain insights about all aspects of our electricity business.
They’ll be spending time with our Engineering, Network Planning, Design, Project Management and Network Operations Centre teams to understand the role each team plays in planning and maintaining our network from concept through to monitoring.
Technical Capability Manager Brendon Jull says the programme is a good way to encourage the next generation of electrical engineers.
“The programme gives high school students a chance to explore a career they’re interested in before they commit to a tertiary education path,” he says.
“For us, it’s a great opportunity to give teenagers a taste of where a career in electrical engineering could take them, and hopefully if they do go on to study and qualify, they’ll consider Powerco once they graduate.”
Both students are planning to study electrical engineering at university in 2024.
